Across industries, attackers are no longer breaking in by exploiting technical security flaws. Instead, they simply walk in the door by impersonating trusted employees. A convincing voice clone during a support call or faceswapped video used in a verification step can be enough for a helpdesk agent to trust the request and proceed with a password reset or MFA re-enrollment. Once an attacker is treated as the real employee, every downstream process grants them the same access and privileges.

AI tools have lowered the skill required for this kind of deception. A determined attacker can generate synthetic voices and videos that are nearly indistinguishable from reality, even mimicking tone, cadence, and in some cases, biometric cues like head movement or pulse patterns. As a result, the familiar identity signals people once relied on to determine whether a request was legitimate no longer hold up.

Where the Identity Gap Appears
