Evolving Identity-Based Attacks Demand Stronger Authentication
Today’s enterprises rely on phishing-resistant MFA and single sign-on (SSO) for secure access. According to Microsoft, “Basic cyber hygiene [including phishing-resistant MFA] presents 98% of attacks.” But as MFA has evolved from SMS OTPs to passkeys, threat actors have adapted. Even phishing-resistant MFA can be exploited: Bad actors have repeatedly been observed calling IT helpdesks, impersonating a locked-out employee, and socially engineering an agent into granting a credential reset. Crowdstrike has an entire section of their 2025 report dedicated to this threat. The FBI, American Hospital Association, and others have also warned against social engineering of helpdesk agents.
