What Unverified Identity Costs Enterprises Every Year

An industry-by-industry breakdown of what unverified identity costs enterprises every year.

We’re thrilled that Nametag has been recognized as a Visionary in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant for Identity Verification (IDV). In our view, when Gartner published the first Magic Quadrant for Identity Verification in 2024, workforce identity was barely a part of the story. Two years later, we feel that workforce identity is now central to how the market is evaluated, and Nametag is central to that story.

This recognition arrives alongside two other recognitions in concurrent Gartner research: Nametag as a Sample Vendor in a new Gartner Hype Cycle™ for Digital Identity, 2026 that identifies Workforce Identity Impersonation Detection as an emerging innovation, and as a Representative Vendor in the 2026 Gartner CISO Edge: Employee Onboarding Is Now Part of the Attack Surface Report in the Direct assessment via identity verification category.

Viewed together, we believe that these research threads converge on the same reality: impersonation is now among the easiest and most effective ways into the enterprise, and analysts are increasingly focused on workforce identity impersonation, the problem Nametag was built to solve.

“We are grateful for this recognition, which we feel reflects the future we anticipated and the category-defining innovations we deliver. Visionary is more than our position in the Gartner® Magic Quadrant™; we think it describes how we've approached identity verification from day one. We saw that identity verification would become a critical security capability to protect the workforce, and we invented the technology and intellectual property portfolio to turn that vision into reality. ”  — Aaron Painter, CEO, Nametag

Workforce Identity Verification is an Evolving Market

AI didn’t create the problem of workforce impersonation, but it collapsed the cost of pretending to be someone else. According to Nametag research, AI-enhanced impersonation attacks are making traditional trust models obsolete, while unverified identity costs the average enterprise as much as $7.8 million per year.

Enterprises are increasingly deploying identity verification to protect vulnerable workforce moments like hiring, onboarding, account recoveries, helpdesk interactions and AI agent actions. But workforce IDV use cases carry unique requirements not found in consumer IDV scenarios.

In Nametag's view, our focus on workforce identity assurance shows up across five dimensions of this year's Gartner research:

1. Security: An increasing share of workforce identity attacks now leverage deepfakes and injection techniques capable of defeating traditional IDV systems. According to Gartner research, 62% of organizations have experienced a deepfake attack involving social engineering or exploiting automated processes, while 32% said they experienced an attack on AI applications that leveraged the application prompt in the last 12 months. Nametag’s cryptography-based security architecture prevents the use of deepfakes and injection attacks, delivering a higher assurance level than the detection-based models of traditional consumer IDV.

2. Privacy: Workforce use cases come with privacy and data controls that consumer use cases weren't built for. Nametag is uniquely positioned to support complex privacy requirements through features like Enterprise Data Custody (bring-your-own-storage for PII), configurable retention policies, and the fact that we do not store biometric data. This allows organizations of all sizes to extend identity assurance across critical workforce moments while meeting their specific privacy requirements and preferences.

3. Automation: Most vendors return uncertain verifications back to your team for final decisioning, adding major costs and operational risks. In contrast, every Nametag verification returns a definitive Pass/Fail decision. Appeals and fraud are sent to our team of specially-trained identity experts. Nametag’s approach results in faster verifications, minimizes employee PII exposure, less risk for your team, and lower costs.

4. Deployment: Nametag delivers fully out-of-the-box solutions through turnkey integrations that connect with your IAM, ITSM, HRIS, and SIEM systems, including Microsoft Entra ID and Active Directory, Okta, Cisco Duo, OneLogin, ServiceNow, Cloudflare, Workday, Greenhouse, Beyond Identity, CrowdStrike, Splunk and more. The result is identity assurance embedded directly into the systems and workflows your teams already use, deployed in minutes, resulting in immediate security benefits and rapid cost savings.

5. Continuity: Where Know Your Customer (KYC) checks are a one-and-done problem, employees and contractors verify and reverify themselves repeatedly. Repeating a full document scan at every one of those moments would be cumbersome. Nametag's patented Reverification technologies dissolve that trade-off by enabling returning users to reverify in seconds with just a selfie, without storing their biometrics. For you, that means high-assurance identity checks without the friction that would make people work around them.

What We Think Makes Nametag Different

We believe that the 2026 Magic Quadrant for Identity Verification shows how Nametag continues to stand out:

  • We are laser-focused on workforce IDV use cases and requirements, with built-in architectural support for the complex data privacy and storage needs of the world's largest enterprises, including bring-your-own-storage.
  • We deliver the level of identity assurance required for high-risk workforce IDV use cases, thanks to our cryptography-based approach that prevents advanced injection attacks and sophisticated deepfake impersonation attempts.
  • We provide a full range of ready-to-use, hosted workforce solutions with integrations that embed identity assurance into existing HR, IT and security workflows, delivering immediate security benefits and rapid time to value.
  • We are built on patented innovations that verify the human behind workforce accounts and actions, including patent-pending technology that binds a verified identity to a verified device and location using cryptographically attested GPS signals.
  • Returning fully automated decisions on every verification, with expert-managed resolutions for fraud and edge cases, significantly reducing the operational costs, burdens, and risks placed on our customers.

The Future of Workforce Identity Assurance

We're thrilled to be named as a Visionary in this year’s Gartner Magic Quadrant for Identity Verification. We’d like to extend immense gratitude to our customers, who trust us to help them solve their hardest workforce identity challenges. Our patent-pending innovation that binds a verified identity to a verified device and location at a specific moment in time is just one example of where workforce identity assurance is heading, a market and problem space Nametag leads.
