A recent flaw discovered in Yellow.ai’s chatbot illustrates how dangerous injection attacks can be when used on AI agents. Researchers discovered that attackers could inject malicious JavaScript into the chat interface to steal cookies and hijack live agent sessions. Once inside, attackers could impersonate support staff and access sensitive conversations.
In identity verification, injection attacks hijack the mechanisms by which a person submits evidence of their identity. Desktop webcams and mobile web browsers are inherently vulnerable to injection attacks because these channels do not have a connection to the secure enclave on your device.
Deepfakes amplify the deception
Injection attacks give bad actors a way to insert a deepfake video and deepfake identity document, or modify the data coming from their device’s sensors, in a way that’s virtually impossible to detect after the fact. But their use of AI doesn’t stop once they’re inside.
Generative AI gives bad actors an incredible tool for making their impersonation scams more convincing. What looks like a trusted person in a video call or message may in fact be an AI clone layered onto a compromised environment.
One high-profile case showed how costly this can be. A finance employee believed they were on a video call with their company’s CFO and several colleagues. After the meeting, they wired $25 million to accounts controlled by attackers. Every “participant” on the call was a deepfake. The voices and video feeds were synthetic, but convincing enough to pass as routine business.
Agentic AI raises the stakes

These autonomous systems can plan tasks, make decisions, and interact with people or software on behalf of employees.
